Protecting Your Computer: Essential Cybersecurity Best Practices

20 February 2024 6 min read

Viruses, phishing, ransomware... Cyber threats are real. Here are the essential best practices to protect your computer and personal data.

Cyber Threats Are a Daily Reality

In 2024, a cyberattack happens every 39 seconds worldwide. Individuals are just as targeted as businesses, often because they're less protected. Good news: a few simple steps dramatically reduce the risks.

The 8 Golden Rules of Cybersecurity

1. Install antivirus and keep it updated

Windows Defender (built into Windows 10/11) provides decent protection if properly configured. For more: Bitdefender, Kaspersky, or Norton are excellent choices.

2. Update your system and software

Most viruses exploit security flaws in outdated software. Enable automatic updates.

3. Be wary of suspicious emails (phishing)

Signs: strange sender address, urgency ("Your account will be suspended in 24h"), link doesn't match the real site, typos.

Golden rule: When in doubt, never click a link in an email. Go directly to the site by typing the address. 4. Use strong, unique passwords

At least 12 characters, mixed letters/numbers/symbols, different for each service. Use a password manager (Bitwarden is free and excellent).

5. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

Even if a hacker knows your password, they can't access your account without the code sent to your phone.

6. Back up your data regularly

In case of ransomware, your only solution is a recent backup. Back up to an external drive and/or cloud.

7. Secure your WiFi

Use a strong WiFi password. Avoid public WiFi for sensitive operations.

8. Be careful with downloads

Only download software from official sites. "Cracked" versions often contain malware.
